Bangor High School
2003-04 Emergency Response GIS Project

A project of NSF, University of Maine GK-12 Sensors! Program, Bangor High School, with Bangor, Maine Police Department and Bangor, Maine Fire Department. Directed by GK-12 Sensors! fellows Brad Neumann and Eeva Hedefine.

Objectives

  • Examine and discuss with students Bangor’s homeland security plan.
  • Provide students with a community service initiative that will produce tangible results for multiple members of the community.
  • Provide citizens of Bangor with emergency response information.
  • Introduce GIS applications to Bangor’s Public Safety services.
  • Provide Bangor’s Public Safety with various emergency response maps.

Overview
Students in Bangor High School's Senior Seminar course entered a joint project with the Bangor Police and Fire departments to develop maps enhancing Bangor’s emergency response systems. The project utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce emergency response maps for Public Safety and the community (see GIS Sample Page). Community members, organizations, and services provided information about critical community services and facilities. Their cooperation enabled students to construct valuable maps that will be utilized by both Bangor Police and Fire Departments and community members in the event of an emergency (see brochure "Bangor Emergency Shelters").
